In the minds of many adults, having a photo taken is the worst thing that can happen. No one wants the extra weight or flaws to be memorialized for all time. All you need is practice using a few tricks and you can be photogenic enough to love having your picture taken.

Step 1:

Accentuate your assets. If all you notice when you look in the mirror is your own flaws, it may be difficult to acknowledge that you have assets. Take heart, everyone has features they can be proud of. Spend some time getting to know yours. Once you’ve taken an honest look at yourself and found what your assets are – sparkling eyes, a dimple that flashes when you smile or creamy, even skin – find a way to show them. This may mean using eyeliner to boost your eye color or wearing a shirt that best highlights your skin or hair color.

Step 2:

Cover your flaws. Just because you make the best of your assets doesn’t mean you can’t also downplay those flaws you see in the mirror. Invest in a high quality concealer that is appropriate for your skin tone if you have scars or dark circles that need to be covered, or if you want to hide acne. But you can always get rid of acne -- and in as few as 3 days -- so why just hide it?

Go easy on the makeup. You want to look like yourself, only better.

Step 3:

Consider the lighting. Fluorescent lights have a tendency to cast a greenish tone over your skin while direct sunlight may create flares or too high of contrast. Make sure whoever is taking the photo considers the lighting and puts you in the best position for the conditions. Shooting in direct sunlight may also cause you to squint, a look that rarely shows anyone to their full advantage.

Step 4:

Try different poses. Some people are just naturally photogenic. They have fun with the camera and instinctively seem to know which poses show their best side. If you are not one of these naturally photogenic people, you will have to try different poses before you find what works for you. Choose a photographer who lets you experiment and makes suggestions for poses. Then get to it. Twirl, move and pose until you find the shot you like.

Step 5:

Show your confidence. The camera captures attitude, so make yours a positive one. Have confidence and that will show in the photos you take.

Step 6:

Smile all the way to your eyes. Don’t just smile the minute someone says, “Cheese.” Photogenic people show real emotion and a real smile in front of the camera. Don’t be nervous. Have a laugh and smile.

Step 7:

Relax. Tension shows in the tightness of your jaw and around your eyes. Take a deep breath and exhale to relax whatever tension you are carrying around.

Step 8:

Have fun with it. The most photogenic people enjoy having their photo taken, which is why children often appear the most photogenic. Promise yourself that you will have fun and enjoy having your photo taken. The image that is captured is one you will love.

Children often take great photos because they are relaxed. Decide not to take life so seriously, and have some fun. Any photo with you in it will be better because you decided to put your best, happiest self forward.
