For men, tying a tie is like a trip to the dentist …you want it over quickly. And after you’re finished, you just want to get the heck outta there and get back to your normal life. Since you might as well make tying and wearing a necktie as quick and comfortable as possible, I give you the Half Windsor knot. When tied correctly, the Half Windsor knot yields a tight, flat triangular knot that looks good with any type of shirt collar. It’s not bulky, but it fills the runway in the shirt collar opening nicely. And the best part is that it’s easy and fast to tie.
I’ve yet to find an answer to the age-old question, “What is the purpose of the men’s necktie”? Are they gender identifiers? Or maybe the sole purpose is to cover the buttons on a dress shirt. Either way, they are a staple of men’s fashion and they ain’t going away anytime soon. The Half Windsor knot tying example below is for righties--just reverse the starting position and sequence if you’re a leftie.

Step 1:

With the top button of your shirt open, wrap the tie around the back of your neck, making sure the wide side of the tie is on your right, the label is facing towards you with the wide side extending lower than the thin side to about 8 inches below your waistline. Then fold the shirt collar back down, covering the tie around the entire length of the collar.

Step 2:

Take the wide side and cross it over the top of the thin side to your left, wrap it around the thin side, then bring it back up to your face. The label side of the tie should be facing you.

Step 3:

Take the wide side of the tie and pass it over the top of the right side of the loop around your neck. Then punch it through the noose and pull it down straight towards your waist. The label of the wide side of the tie should now be facing away from you.

Step 4:

Take the wide side into your right hand, bring it up level with your shoulders and pass it over and across the knot at a 90-degree angle. Wrap it around to the back of the knot and then pull it through the noose to the front of the knot. Keep the knot loose to allow for the slack needed finish tying the knot.

Step 5:

Again, grab the knot using one hand as a shaper, but this time pull down on the thin side of the tie while the other hand pushes the knot up towards the neckline and voila, you’ve got yourself a comfortable Half Windsor knot. Some additional primping may be necessary, depending on your personal taste and or the position of the knot in the collar cavity. Enjoy.
