Choosing the right exotic pet for you can be a long and complicated process. However, it can also be well worth the effort. Finding the animal that is the perfect match for your needs, desires, and home can make having an exotic pet the wonderful experience that it should be.
- Make a list. It is important to make a list and assess the things that you want and the things that you don't want. Add all of the pros that you want and the cons that you are hoping to avoid. Include in this list how much money you are going to be able to spend, both in buying the animal and in taking care of him or her. Add things like size, food types, and answer the question of whether you are looking for a single pet or more than one. Additionally, consider the type of relationship that you want to have with the animal. Some animals are better at cuddling, such as a well-cared-for sugar glider or ferret. Others are cool, but should really be left alone, like the tarantula or the scorpion.
- Start researching. Now that you have your list of criteria, you can start researching the various types of animals that you are interested in. Most likely, you have something in mind and that is where you should start. If the animals that you are looking at are a perfect match, that's great. If they are not, keep looking until you find something that you are interested in.
- When you think you have found the perfect animal, step back and find out more. Sure, it's great to think, this is it....this is the animal I want! If that is the case, then take a step back and review what all exotic pet owners should think about.
- Is this animal legal where I live? One of the biggest hang-ups for many exotic pet owners is legality. Many exotic pets are not allowed in certain countries, states or provinces, or cities, towns, or counties. You need to find out what the laws in your area are. It is not a good idea for you to get attached to the idea of owning a pet that is illegal where you live.
- Are you going to want to keep this pet its entire life? You will want to answer this question honestly. Many exotic pets that end up in shelters and rescues do so because the owner didn't think things through, and no one really wants that. Consider the age the animal will most likely live to. When getting an exotic pet, you need to be prepared to be committed to that animal for the length of its life, even if that length is 20+ years. Sure something may happen, but it is best to think about whether or not you will want to take care of this animal for its entire life.
- Can I provide for this animal's needs? When figuring out if a pet is for you, you must look at the animal's needs. Can you meet them? This includes financial needs, housing, food, toys, love and care, as well as a veterinarian. Many vets won't deal with exotic pets. This makes veterinarian care for exotics harder to find and more expensive. You must make sure that your pet has a vet, before he or she comes to your house. This will help you make sure your pet has all his needed shots, that he is healthy, and that if something happens, such as illness or injury, there is someone there to help you meet his needs.
- Is my home and family appropriate? This is a big one you must ask yourselves. Many exotic pets should not be owned by families with young kids. Some need a large backyard or even a lot more space than a large yard can offer. Others need someone who can spend a lot of time with them. Assessing your home and your family to find out if you will be able to meet your pet's needs is very important.
- If you still have the right pet, then you need to meet some. In some places, finding a breeder is difficult; in others, it is easy. It is best to get your new pet from a reputable breeder. This will mean they have been well taken care of, they will be bred for temperament, and the breeder will interview you to see if you are right for the pet type of your choice. Most breeders will let you meet at least some of the exotic pets of your choice. You can offer to volunteer, to help out, and to get to know them. This will give you some hands-on experience with them.
- If you have found your next exotic pet, start preparing. You should be ready for your new pet before applying with a breeder. This means should there be one who needs a home, you are ready right away. It also gives the breeder the option to check out your facilities, be it house, cage, or backyard to see if they meet with his or her approval.
It takes a lot of work and investigation to make a responsible exotic pet decision. There are many things to consider and a lot of research that should go into it. However, if you really do follow the steps outlined above, then you will find the perfect pet for you and you will have a lifelong friend. You will also be a stellar candidate for taking this pet in and providing it the perfect home!

Very Helpful. Especially the link for " how to decide what pet is right for you"
Something else to keep in mind: "Are you ready to be an 'animal ambassador' "? If you own an exotic, you will be asked the same questions a hundred times, and some you haven't heard before. Be ready to correct misconceptions and disseminate accurate info to people!
